‘these things happen‘ is one of my favourite phrases.
I love that it applies to every situation, thought and feeling; the good, the bad and the changeable…
“When it is impossible for anger to arise within you, you find no outside enemies anywhere. ~Lama Zopa Rinpoche
When we speak of a calm state of mind or peace of mind, we shouldn’t confuse that with an insensitive state of apathy. Having a calm or peaceful state of mind doesn’t mean being spaced out or completely empty. Peace of mind or a calm state of mind is rooted in affection and compassion and is sensitive and responsive to others.

Should a person do good, let
him do it again and again. Let him
find pleasure therein, for blissful is
the accumulation of good.

The attainment of enlightenment is a very great objective, and we cannot expect to see results immediately. Still, we should remain joyful in our practice and apply steady and sustained effort, confident in the knowledge that when all the causes are gathered, the results will definitely come.
In the current economic climate, or at anytime, is it reasonable or fair to hold to the belief that hard work brings results?

We should practice like Geshe Ben Gungyal and watch our own mind, or mental continuum, in everything we do. Usually we keep an eye on what other people are doing, but it would be much better if we kept an eye on what is going on in our own mind. Whatever actions we are doing, whether working, talking, relaxing, or studying Dharma, one part of our mind should always be watching to check what thoughts are arising.

Wisdom is not the same as worldly intelligence. It is possible to have great intelligence but little wisdom. For example, people who invent weapons of mass destruction are very clever from a worldly point of view, but they have very little wisdom.
The Bodhisattva Vow
Just as when a gardener sows a pea seed it is definite that peas and not barley will grow, and when he sows nothing it is definite that nothing will grow, so when we perform positive actions it is definite that we shall experience happy results, when we perform negative actions it is definite that we shall experience unhappy results, and when we perform neutral actions it is definite that we shall experience neutral results.
